SUMMARY

Stuart Weiss is a business valuation (BV) practitioner based in Portland, Oregon. He also serves as an expert witness in economic damages cases.

In addition to the CPA certificate, he holds BV designations from three of the four U.S. accrediting organizations.

  1. He is a CPA/ABV (Accredited in Business Valuation), a designation issued by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA).
  2. He is also a CVA, a designation issued by the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts (NACVA), where Mr. Weiss serves as president of the Oregon chapter in which he leads continuing education sessions.
  3. In addition, he holds the Accredited in Business Appraisal Review (ABAR) designation by the Institute of Business Appraisers, the only designation in the profession that focuses on reviewing BV reports.

Mr. Weiss is also a principal in a family business where, as treasurer, he is responsible for investing in the firm’s stock market portfolio. To reinforce this activity, he recently passed the Series 65 Examination and achieved the AICPA’s designation in personal financial planning. His experience includes a stint on Wall Street as an equity analyst and several years as a writer for Business Week magazine in New York. He holds an MBA from Stanford and a bachelor of science from UCLA, graduating Phi Beta Kappa.

EXPERIENCE

VALUATION-RELATED WORK

Mr. Weiss typically performs business valuation assignments for gift/estate tax, divorce or shareholder dispute purposes. The types of business represent the entire spectrum of American industry. Most of the clients are family business owners who have been advised by their attorney or CPA to have their business valued.

Mr. Weiss is frequently asked to testify in a damages dispute. He has done so in divorce, shareholder oppression, personal injury and business damages settings. Because of his writing background, he is able to explain complex financial topics to judges and juries in lay terms.

Since 1984, Mr. Weiss has been treasurer of his spouse’s family business, Summit Properties, where he reviews monthly financial statements, evaluates industrial real estate investments and analyzes master limited partnership investments in the energy industry.

During the 1980s, Mr. Weiss was a writer for Business Week magazine and an equity analyst for Oppenheimer & Co., where he specialized in researching mid-cap stocks.
